A customer used to type a query, scan ten blue links and pick one. Now a large share of them read an AI written answer and never click at all. If you are asking what is AEO and GEO SEO, here is the plain version. AEO is Answer Engine Optimisation, getting your page used as the source of a direct answer, and GEO is Generative Engine Optimisation, getting your business named inside text that a model writes.
Neither one replaces ordinary search work. Every AI answer worth studying is assembled from pages that already rank, already load fast and already say something specific. That base is the same one our SEO team starts with on any project. AEO and GEO change what you write on top of it, and how you judge whether it worked.
What is AEO and GEO SEO, in practical terms?
AEO is writing and marking up pages so a machine can lift one clean answer out of them. GEO is the wider job of making your brand a named, verifiable entity that generative models are willing to repeat. AEO wins the citation, GEO wins the mention. Both need content a model can check elsewhere.
The split matters because the work splits. AEO is page level: the heading, the answer, the markup, one clear claim per block. GEO is business level: a consistent name and address, third party mentions, reviews, an About page that states plainly who you are and what you do. A model that cannot verify your business anywhere else will not risk naming it.
Most Indian service businesses are strong on the first half and weak on the second. There is a website and a Google Business Profile, and then nothing. No consistent listings, no named authors, no page that says which cities you actually serve.
How do AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity choose sources?
None of them publish a ranking formula. From what is observable, they favour pages that already rank for the query, that state the answer in one self contained passage, and that can be corroborated by an independent source. Freshness, a named author and a clean technical base all help.
| Surface | Where it draws from | What tends to earn a citation |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | The Google index, weighted towards pages that already rank | A short, self contained answer near the top of a page that ranks |
| ChatGPT search | A live web index on top of the model itself | Clear entity signals and a page that answers the exact prompt |
| Perplexity | Live retrieval across several sources per answer | Specific, quotable statements and a recent publication date |
| Classic results and the Map Pack | The Google index and your Google Business Profile | Relevance, proximity and prominence, as before |
Two patterns hold across all of them. Pages that answer in one lift get quoted, and pages that bury the answer under 400 words of preamble do not. A claim that appears on your site and nowhere else is treated as unverified, which is why mentions on other sites matter more now than they did three years ago.
Write the answer before you write the article
This is the highest value change most sites can make, and it costs nothing but discipline. Take the questions your sales team hears every week, make each one a heading, and answer it straight away.
- Write the question the way a customer says it out loud, and use that as your heading.
- Answer it in the next paragraph, in roughly 40 to 55 words, with no warm up.
- Put the specifics inside that answer: the price band, the timeline, the city, the condition that changes the answer.
- Expand underneath for the reader who wants the reasoning behind it.
- Keep one idea per heading so a machine can lift a clean block without dragging in unrelated text.
- Use a table or a short list only when it genuinely compresses the answer.
Originality is the other half, and it is harder. A model has already read every generic description of your service, so it has no reason to repeat another one. It will quote the page that carries something it cannot get elsewhere: your process, your real timelines, a limitation you are willing to admit, a comparison you have actually run.
Being quotable also means being checkable. Attribute figures to their source, date your claims, and put a real name on advice pages. If your site is the only place on the internet making a claim, expect it to be skipped rather than repeated.
Structured data, entity clarity and the boring plumbing
Answer engines parse structure before they judge prose. Organization and LocalBusiness schema tell a machine what your business is, where it operates and how to reach it, while Service and Article markup do the same job at page level. If you have never audited this, start with the schema types a local business actually needs.
Treat FAQPage markup as machine readable structure rather than a guaranteed search feature. Google has narrowed where FAQ rich results appear, so the visible reward is smaller than it was. The markup still hands a parser a clean question and answer pair, which is the point. Keep the marked up text identical to the text a visitor can see.
Entity clarity is duller and matters more. Your legal name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your site, your Google Business Profile, JustDial, IndiaMART and any association listing. Add sameAs links from your schema to those profiles. Confusion here is the most common reason a model names your category instead of your company.
None of this works if the pages are slow or blocked. Crawl access, clean HTML, working canonical tags and content that is present without JavaScript still decide whether anything gets read at all. Our guide to the technical layer covers that ground, and keeping your Google Business Profile accurate covers the listing side.
Does GEO mean you can stop chasing rankings?
No. Every generative surface we have tested pulls mostly from pages that already rank on page one, so ranking is the entry ticket rather than an old habit. Treat AEO and GEO as a second layer on a working SEO programme, not a replacement, and keep measuring ordinary organic enquiries.
The practical consequence is that the diagnosis order does not change. If your pages are not indexed, not fast and not relevant, no amount of answer formatting will help, so the causes covered in the reasons a site fails to rank come first. For anything with local intent, the Map Pack is still the surface worth winning before you worry about generative answers.
There is also a commercial reason to keep both. An AI answer that names you but sends no click still creates a branded search later, and that search lands on a page you control. If that page is thin, the mention is wasted.
What should an Indian business fix first?
Fix the plumbing before the clever bits. Get your Google Business Profile accurate, your Organization and LocalBusiness schema valid, your key pages fast, and your contact details written identically everywhere. Then rewrite your top five commercial pages so each one opens with a direct answer a model could quote.
- One page for each service and each city you genuinely serve, not a keyword grid.
- Name, address and phone written the same way on your site, Google Business Profile, JustDial and IndiaMART.
- Valid Organization and LocalBusiness schema, checked in Google's Rich Results Test.
- A named author or reviewer on advice pages, with one line on why that person is qualified.
- Core Web Vitals passing on mobile, tested on a real mobile connection rather than office wifi.
- A question phrased heading with a direct answer on every commercial page.
- Honest price bands wherever you are able to publish them.
That is a quarter of steady work for most sites, not a weekend. If you want a second opinion before you start, our search team in Pune reviews sites for clients across Pimpri-Chinchwad and Vadodara, and you can tell us what you are trying to fix. We reply within one business day.
Measurement is immature, and pretending otherwise is expensive
This is the honest part. No tool reliably tells you what share of AI answers name your business, and Search Console does not cleanly separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary ones. Referrals from ChatGPT and Perplexity do appear in analytics, usually in small numbers that move for reasons you cannot see.
So measure what you can defend. Keep a prompt log: twenty questions a customer might ask, run monthly across two or three assistants, with a note on whether you were named and which page was cited. Watch branded search volume and direct traffic over quarters rather than weeks. Add a "how did you hear about us" field to your enquiry form and read the answers.
Be suspicious of anyone selling guaranteed AI citations. We do not guarantee rankings, and we will not guarantee a mention inside a system whose owners change its behaviour without notice. What we will do is build the conditions that make a citation likely, then report plainly on what moved and what did not.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate budget for AEO and GEO?
Usually not. SEO in India runs from about Rs 8,000 to Rs 80,000 per month, with local SEO commonly between Rs 15,000 and Rs 40,000. AEO and GEO work sits inside that scope as a change in how pages are written, structured and marked up, not as a separate line item.
Does FAQ schema still work in 2026?
It still helps machines parse your page, even though Google now shows FAQ rich results far less often than it once did. Use it where you have genuine questions and answers on the page, keep the markup identical to the visible text, and do not expect a visual reward in the results.
Can I block AI crawlers and still get cited?
Partly, at best. Blocking a vendor's crawler generally removes you from that assistant's live browsing results, which is the opposite of what most businesses want. Crawler names and controls change often, so check each vendor's own documentation before editing robots.txt instead of copying a rule from a blog post.
How long before this work shows anything?
Expect months rather than weeks, and expect the first movement in ordinary organic results before anything shows up in AI answers. We work in weekly checkpoints so you can see what changed and when. Nobody can promise a citation, and any agency that does is guessing.
Where to start this quarter
Pick your five most commercial pages. Add a question heading and a direct answer to each, fix the schema, and get the load time right. That is a fortnight of focused work for most sites, and it improves ordinary rankings whether or not the AI surfaces ever quote you.
The businesses that get named in AI answers are the ones that were already clear, specific and verifiable. Everything above is a way of getting there sooner rather than later. If you want help deciding the order of work, send us your site and your top ten customer questions and we will tell you what we would change first.
