Why is my website not ranking on Google is the question we hear most often on a first call. The site is live. The pages look fine. Nothing happens.

Not ranking is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are seven common causes and they sit in a strict order, because a page Google has never seen cannot be rescued by better writing. What follows is the same sequence our team uses before we quote anyone for search engine optimisation work, and you can run most of it yourself in an hour with a browser and Google Search Console.

Why is my website not ranking on Google?

Seven things cause it, in a fixed order: the page is not indexed, something blocks crawling, a manual action is live, the content misses search intent, the page is thin, the site is too slow on mobile, or the domain has no authority for a keyword this competitive. Work down that list in order.

Each cause blocks the ones below it. Rewriting a page that carries a noindex tag changes nothing. So work top to bottom and stop at the first check that fails, then fix that before you look at anything else.

  1. Confirm the page is indexed using a site: search.
  2. Rule out blocking: robots.txt, noindex tags, canonical tags, staging settings.
  3. Check Search Console for a manual action.
  4. Compare your page against the intent of the current top ten results.
  5. Judge whether the page has real depth or only word count.
  6. Test speed and usability on a real mid range Android phone.
  7. Assess your authority and how competitive the keyword actually is.

The table below maps the symptom you can see to the cause you cannot. Use it to jump to the right check instead of guessing.

Is your site actually in Google's index?

Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If nothing comes back, Google has not indexed a single page and no amount of keyword work will help. If the home page appears but your service pages do not, indexing is partial, which usually points at thin pages, blocked resources or a site Google does not trust yet.

Run the same check page by page. Search site:yourdomain.com/services/plumbing and see whether that exact URL exists in the index. A new site can take days or weeks to be indexed, and Google is under no obligation to index every page you publish.

Search Console gives you the reason. Open the Pages report and read the Not indexed list: Crawled currently not indexed usually means Google saw the page and judged it not worth keeping. Discovered currently not indexed often means crawl priority is low. Both are quality signals, not bugs.

  • Pages report: how many URLs are indexed, and the stated reason for the rest.
  • URL Inspection run on your three most important money pages.
  • Manual Actions: it should read No issues detected.
  • Performance report over 16 months, looking for a cliff on a single date.
  • Core Web Vitals, checked separately for mobile and desktop.
  • Sitemaps: submitted, read without errors, count close to your real page count.

Are you blocking Google by accident?

Four settings do most of the damage: a Discourage search engines box left ticked in WordPress, a noindex tag carried over from staging, a robots.txt Disallow rule, and a canonical tag pointing every page at the home page. Check all four before you touch anything else.

We see the staging problem constantly. A developer builds on a test domain with indexing switched off, then copies the site across without clearing the setting. The site launches, looks perfect and stays invisible for months while everyone waits for SEO to work.

Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and read it. A line saying Disallow: / blocks the whole site. Then view the page source of a key page and search for noindex. These two checks take two minutes and they sit at the front of what technical SEO actually covers.

Manual actions and the sudden sitewide drop

A manual action means a human reviewer at Google penalised your site, usually for bought links, spun content or sneaky redirects. Search Console reports it plainly under Security and Manual Actions. If it says No issues detected, you do not have a penalty and you can stop worrying about one.

Far more common is a core update. If traffic fell sharply on a single date and stayed down, compare that date against Google's published update history. A core update is not a punishment; it is Google re-scoring quality across the whole index, and recovery needs rebuilding rather than a quick patch.

Sudden drops also follow migrations. A redesign that changes URLs without redirects, a lapsed SSL certificate or a hosting move can wipe rankings in a week. If your drop lines up with a site change rather than an update date, start there. If you cannot tell which one hit you, send us the dates and we will look, or read how we approach a recovery after a core update.

Intent mismatch and thin pages

Open an incognito window and search your target keyword. Look at what actually ranks. If the top ten are all comparison articles and your page is a sales page, you are not competing, you are in the wrong format entirely.

Intent mismatch is one of the most common reasons a decent page sits on page three. Someone searching best CRM for small business wants a list to compare. Someone searching CRM pricing India wants numbers. A page that pitches your product answers neither question.

Thin content is the sibling problem. Six hundred words of generic service description, the same three paragraphs repeated across ten city pages, or a blog post that says nothing a reader could not guess. Google has plenty of that already and no reason to add yours.

The fix is not more words. It is a page that answers the question completely: price ranges, what is included, what is not, how long it takes, what usually goes wrong, and who it suits. If you cannot write that page honestly, you are probably not ready to target that keyword.

Is your site too slow to compete?

Speed rarely causes a total ranking failure on its own. It decides close calls. Google's Core Web Vitals flag a slow largest contentful paint as needing work, and a large share of Indian visitors arrive on mid range Android phones, so a slow page loses the tie and loses the lead.

Test on PageSpeed Insights, then test on an actual phone using mobile data. Lab scores flatter you. Real conditions in a Pune or Vadodara suburb at 7pm do not. Our Core Web Vitals walkthrough covers the three metrics and what actually moves them.

Sometimes the honest answer is that the site cannot be fixed cheaply. A heavy theme with a dozen plugins doing the work of two, images uploaded straight from a phone camera, no caching and crowded shared hosting will fight you at every step. At that point it is cheaper to rebuild it properly than to keep patching.

Authority, competition and the keyword you cannot win yet

If every check above passes and you still do not rank, the answer is usually the least welcome one. Older sites with more links, more brand searches and more history outrank you because Google trusts them more. That gap closes slowly, and it closes through work rather than tricks.

Be realistic about the keyword itself. A site only a few months old is very unlikely to rank for digital marketing agency against national players with years of coverage. It can rank for digital marketing agency in Akurdi, or for one service paired with one specific problem, and those searches tend to bring people who are closer to buying.

This is where local and national strategies diverge. Local rankings lean on Google Business Profile, proximity, reviews and consistent listings on JustDial and IndiaMART. Work through a proper local SEO checklist before you spend anything on national keywords. Our Pune SEO team starts almost every local project this way.

One more honest point. We do not guarantee rankings, and you should walk away from anyone who does. Google does not sell positions, nobody outside Google controls the algorithm, and a ranking guarantee is either a lie or a promise about a keyword nobody searches.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a new website take to start ranking in India?

Indexing takes days to a few weeks. Meaningful rankings for competitive commercial keywords usually take several months of consistent work, while low competition local terms can move sooner. Anyone quoting you a fixed date is guessing. We set weekly checkpoints so you see progress instead of waiting in silence.

My rankings dropped suddenly. Should I change my content immediately?

No. Find the date first, then match it against a core update, a site change or a manual action. Changing content blind destroys the evidence and often deepens the drop. Diagnose, wait for at least one crawl cycle, then act on what the data tells you.

Do I need blog posts to rank my service pages?

Not always, but usually. Blog posts earn links and answer the questions buyers ask before they are ready to buy, then pass that authority to your service pages through internal links. A service page with no supporting content competes with one hand tied.

Can an SEO agency guarantee first page rankings?

No, and RKWS will not. Google's results depend on competitors, updates and intent, none of which any agency controls. What a good agency commits to is the work, the reporting and the timeline. Judge proposals on that, not on promises about positions.

Where to start on Monday morning

Do the cheap checks first. Run the site: search, read your robots.txt, then open Search Console and look at Manual Actions and the Pages report. A surprising number of sites that "do not rank" fail on one of those three, and all three cost nothing to check.

If everything passes and you are still invisible, the problem is competitive rather than technical, and that needs a plan rather than a fix. Our method is Connect, Build, Launch, Optimise: work out what is actually wrong, fix it, ship it, then measure it, with weekly checkpoints and a reply within one business day. Send your domain and the keywords you expected to rank for through our enquiry form and we will tell you which of the seven causes applies.
