Your rankings look stable. Your traffic does not. That gap is the AI Overviews impact on SEO, and it is changing how search sends traffic to your site. Google answers more questions on the results page itself, using content pulled from sites like yours, and the reader never arrives.
This post covers what is actually happening, which of your pages are exposed, and what to fix first. It has already reshaped how we plan SEO work for every client from month one. None of it needs a rebuild. It needs a decision about which queries are still worth chasing.
What are AI Overviews, and how often do they appear?
AI Overviews are Google generated summaries that sit above the classic blue links, stitched together from multiple sources and shown with small citation links. Industry analyses published in 2026 report they appear in roughly 20 percent of searches overall, rising to about 37 percent in some countries.
They are not a test. They occupy the space that used to belong to the first organic result, and they push everything else down the page. Industry analyses published in 2026 also report AI Overviews on around 89 percent of brand name search results, which means people searching for you by name may read a summary before they read your site.
Two things follow from that. Your brand story is being summarised by a system you do not control. Your best informational pages are now source material rather than destinations.
The AI Overviews impact on SEO: what 2026 reporting shows
The honest answer is that the effect is uneven and badly measured, but the direction is clear. 2026 reporting suggests roughly 60 to 63 percent of Google searches now end without a click to an external site. Sites that have not adapted have reported traffic declines of 20 to 40 percent on informational queries. On some high impression queries, click through rate has been reported falling from about 1.76 percent to about 0.61 percent.
Read that last number carefully. It is not a ranking drop. The page still appears and fewer people press it. That is why your position report and your analytics now tell different stories, and why planning for searches that end without a click is a separate exercise rather than an SEO footnote.
There is an Indian wrinkle as well. A large share of local demand here still moves through Google Maps, JustDial and IndiaMART rather than a plain web query, and much of the follow up happens on WhatsApp. That mix cushions some businesses and exposes others almost completely.
What changes in practice:
- Impressions can rise while sessions fall, and both numbers are correct.
- Top of funnel blog traffic loses value faster than bottom of funnel pages.
- Brand searches carry more weight, because they are harder to intercept.
- Being quoted inside the answer starts to matter as much as ranking below it.
- Content that restates what everyone else says has no reason to be cited at all.
Which searches are exposed and which are protected?
Informational queries are the most exposed, because a summary can fully answer them. Local, transactional and branded searches are more protected, since the searcher wants a map listing, a price, a form or a specific company. Exposure is a spectrum rather than a switch, so audit query by query.
| Query type | Example | Exposure to AI Overviews | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informational | what is technical SEO | High | Answer in the first 60 words, add original data, accept fewer clicks |
| Commercial comparison | WooCommerce or Shopify for India | Medium to high | Add firsthand testing, real cost bands and honest trade offs |
| Local intent | web development company near Akurdi | Low | Protect the map pack, reviews and profile accuracy |
| Transactional | book a website audit | Low | Page speed, short forms, WhatsApp and call tracking |
| Branded | your company name plus reviews | Summary shown, click still likely | Control the entity: about page, listings, consistent details |
For many Indian service businesses, local search is still where the enquiries come from. Someone looking for a clinic, a builder or an IT vendor in Pimpri-Chinchwad wants a phone number and directions, not a paragraph. That is why Google Business Profile management and the local checks we run first have become higher priority work, not lower.
The uncomfortable part is the middle of your blog. Pages written to catch broad questions were always the weakest link in the funnel. They are now the first thing an overview replaces.
What actually earns a citation inside the answer?
Google cites sources that state the answer plainly, early, and in a structure a machine can parse. In practice that means a direct answer near the top, clean headings, specific numbers you can stand behind, firsthand experience, unambiguous entity signals and correct schema. Thin rewrites of existing pages are not cited.
On 15 May 2026 Google published official guidance on optimising for generative AI search. It did not describe a new checklist so much as a stricter version of the old one. Useful, original, clearly structured content still wins. There is simply less room for the padding that used to survive.
- Put the answer in the first two sentences under a heading, then explain it.
- Keep one idea per heading and phrase several headings as real questions.
- Publish something only you have: your own cost bands, timelines and failure cases.
- Name entities precisely, including city, service and brand, without vague synonyms.
- Mark up organisation, article, FAQ and local business data correctly.
- Show who wrote the page and why that person is worth quoting.
One test we use is blunt. Delete every sentence a competitor could have written, then look at what is left. If nothing is left, there is no reason for a summary to cite you rather than them. Our guide to how AEO, GEO and classic SEO fit together goes deeper on the formats that get pulled into answers.
The measurement problem nobody wants to admit
This part is easy to skip over, so we will say it plainly. Search Console does not separate AI Overview impressions and clicks into their own report. An impression inside an overview can look much like a normal top of page impression, which makes average position misleading and year on year comparisons unreliable.
So we measure around it. We watch the ratio of impressions to clicks by query group rather than by page. We track branded search volume, direct traffic, calls and form fills, because those hold up when informational sessions fall. We also check by hand whether an overview fires for the top twenty queries, on mobile, from the right city.
Set a baseline now if you have not already. Export twelve months of query level data, tag each query by intent, and store it outside the tool. When the next core update lands you will want a before, and Search Console will not keep one for you.
Anyone who hands you a precise AI Overview traffic loss figure is estimating. We will tell you when we are estimating.
A 90 day plan you can run without a rebuild
You do not need a new website for this. You need to re-sort what you already have. This is the order our search team in Pune works through, and it fits the weekly checkpoints we run on every engagement.
- List your top 30 queries and tag each one informational, local, transactional or branded.
- Check by hand which of them trigger an AI Overview today, on a mobile device.
- Rewrite exposed pages so the direct answer sits inside the first 60 words.
- Add one original element per page: your data, your process, your photos, your numbers.
- Fix schema and entity details so name, address, services and categories match everywhere.
- Shift budget from broad informational content toward local, comparison and bottom of funnel pages.
- Rebuild reporting around leads and branded demand instead of raw sessions.
Most of that is editing, not building. A focused pass across 15 to 20 pages usually runs a few weeks, and campaigns we launch alongside it go live in 2 to 4 weeks. Local SEO programmes in India generally sit between Rs 15,000 and Rs 40,000 a month and national SEO between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1,50,000, so how you split the budget matters more than the total.
If you want a second opinion on which of your pages are exposed, send us your top ten queries and we will tell you what we see.
What we would stop doing right now
Some old habits are now actively risky. Google began rolling out the August 2026 Spam Update on 18 August, targeting scaled content abuse, expired domain abuse, site reputation abuse and unnatural link schemes. It also expanded the spam policy to cover attempts to manipulate AI Overviews and AI Mode. Publishing volume to chase citations is precisely the behaviour being targeted.
Volatility is high too. Google ran five core updates between March and August 2026, roughly every six to seven weeks, and the May 2026 core update began rolling out on 21 May and took up to two weeks to finish. A bad fortnight is not proof of a broken strategy. Our review checklist for the 2026 spam update covers what to look at before you react.
We also do not guarantee rankings, and nobody honest does. What we commit to is the method: connect, build, launch, optimise, with weekly checkpoints and a reply within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews mean SEO is dead in India?
No. It means informational traffic is worth less and local, branded and transactional traffic is worth more. Indian service businesses still get a steady flow of enquiries from map results, reviews and direct calls. None of that disappears because a summary sits at the top of the page.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
You can apply nosnippet and max-snippet controls, but they usually cut your normal search visibility as well. For most businesses that trade is not worth it. The better move is to make your pages easy to cite and to build demand that does not depend on one informational query.
How long before changes show up in AI Overviews?
There is no fixed timeline, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Content changes need to be crawled and reassessed, and core updates land every few weeks. We look at six to twelve weeks of data before drawing conclusions, with weekly checkpoints in between so you are never left waiting.
Does a Google Business Profile still matter for this?
More than before. Local queries are the least exposed to AI Overviews, and the map pack is still the shortest path from a search to a phone call. Accurate categories, real photos, consistent details and a steady flow of reviews do more for a local business than another blog post.
Where this leaves your search strategy
This shift is not the end of search traffic. It is a re-pricing. Informational clicks are easier to lose and harder to keep, while local visibility, brand recall and clean entity data have become the assets worth defending.
Start with the audit, not the rewrite. Sort your queries, check which ones show an overview today, and see how much of your traffic sits in the exposed group. If you would rather have someone else run that first pass, talk to us about your search traffic and we will go through it with you.
